Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda is unlike any other city in Africa. Its streets are wide and clean, traffic on the whole is calm and orderly, and buildings are large and modern. It is in the outskirts of this city where life starts to feel more like Africa as we know it. Start your trip to Rwanda with a visit to the Genocide Memorial to learn in-depth the history of the 100 day conflict that rocked this country to its core in 1994. The facts and stories are shocking but vital to the remainder of your trip and how you experience and view this tiny landlocked African country. Spend your remaining time in Kigali meeting women artisans, experiencing African music and trying local food.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
This is a unique national park compared to others we have experienced in Africa. For the better part of a decade the staff here have worked with the local community and poachers to reduce poaching in the park from hundreds of animals per year to none. This has allowed them to reintroduce rhinos and lions back into the park to make them a big five safari reserve once again. Start your safari experience with a visit to the park headquarters where you will be told the complex story of the park before beginning your search for this very special wildlife in the wild.
Nyungwe is breathtaking, fact. The rainforest setting will absorb you and have you feeling as though you have travelled to the ends of the earth. Here you will have the chance to fully immerse yourself in local life meeting tea growers and enjoy a tasting, walking rope bridges through the rainforest tree tops and tracking chimpanzees in the wild. Gain firsthand insights into local life as you spend time with those who were born and raised in this incredible landscape. En route to Volcanoes National Park stop at a reconciliation village to meet the families caught up on both sides of the genocide, but who now live peacefully and harmoniously together.
volcanoes national park
This national park in the north of Rwanda bordering Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to 360º views of six sister volcanoes. It is the stop in your itinerary to slow down, enjoy a little luxury and soak up your surroundings. Revel in being taken care of while you learn about the area, the local gorillas and Dian Fossey's unbelievable wildlife legacy. Your hotel looks out on the volcanoes she scaled in order to better understand these beautiful creatures.
gorillas in the mist
The piece-de-resistance of our Curio Trips itinerary is a morning walking in Dian Fossey's footsteps tracking gorillas in the wild. Gorilla permits are limited and the price tag is high, but there is no doubt this once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experience is worth it! After an early morning wake up call, your first stop is the national park headquarters where you will meet your highly skilled guide and learn the name and details of the gorilla family you are tracking. The excitement starts here! After an exhilarating hike the moment you see your first gorilla will stay with you for a lifetime. Enjoy one hour with the gorilla family under the watchful supervision of your expert guide before bidding farewell and hiking out of their habitat. Celebrate the morning with a glass of champagne back at your hotel before spending the afternoon reflecting on your trip and the change you want to see in the world.
